Tiger junior varsity, frosh go winless against Burnet

Jocelyn Lewis Photos Burnet booted a 37-yard field goal with two minutes remaining to clip the Rockdale junior varsity 17-14 Thursday on the road.

Rockdale tied the score when John Mendoza flung a 76-yard touchdown pass to Tim Mitchell, followed by Derek Whitsel’s pass to Eric Davenport for the conversion.

After holding Burnet in the red zone twice, the Tigers roared to the halftime lead when Whitsel connected with Billy Harris from 55 yards away to make it 14-8.

After stopping Burnet again in the third quarter, the Bulldogs finally crossed the goal line to knot the game 14-all after a missed two-point conversion.

According to coaches, Whitsel, and Mendoza were the standouts on offense, while on defense, linebacker Whitsel (fumble recovery), cornerback Mitchell (interception), defensive end Davenport, defensive end Jarad Gerren and linebacker Jon Hines were the leaders.

Freshmen

The Tigers couldn’t get anything going on offense and were shutout 34-0 by Burnet, which scored all its points in the first half.

Tailback James Webb, receiver Fred Henderson, Cristian Lara, defensive tackle Kacey Waxler and defensive end Darius O’Bryant were singled out for outstanding play.
