Central Texas Outdoor Expo a big hit

Second annual event includes cookoff, contests and the Cavalry

Photo coutesy of Rockdale Chamber of Commerce The second annual Central Texas Outdoor Expo sponsored by the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce has been deemed a success by organizers.

Estimates are that around 3,500 people attended the event held Friday and Saturday at Apache Pass, located on FM 908 north of Rockdale.

“We believe the event grew substantially this year. We are pleased with the turnout and can’t wait to plan for 2013. I would like to thank all of the sponsors and volunteers,” Chamber president Deedra Jacob said. “This truly was a group effort, with volunteers from Rockdale, Thorndale and Cameron.”

Saturday was highlighted by a Civil War re-enactment by members of Terry’s Texas Rangers Company F of Hays County, along with winners crowned in the 28-team barbecue cookoff and a dance featuring the country music band “Little Texas.”

Competitions in skeet shooting, washers, horseshoes, along with a raffle were held over the two-day event.

The Ben Baxter Band of Austin were winners of the “Battle of the Bands” contest held Friday night and opened up for Little Texas on Saturday.

OTHER ACTIVITIE¬≠S— There were also food and retail vendors, a gunny sack slide, rock climbing, pony rides, exotic petting zoo, face painting, a mechanical horse, fly fishing demonstration and lessons, Texas Parks and Wildlife display, Texas Master Naturalist exhibits and a Wild West Regulators show.
