Prayer vigil for 2-year-old cancer patient Dustin Pickel

St. John’s United Methodist Church will hold a 12-hour prayer vigil for 2-year-old Dustin John Pickel and his family on Oct. 12, the day he has surgery at Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City.

Dustin has a malignant neuroblastoma in his abdomen next to his kidney. He has undergone five rounds of chemotherapy and the tumor has been reduced to operable size.

Dustin is the son of Kelly and Jeff Pickel of Round Rock. He has an older brother Braden, 5, a kindergarten student, and a baby brother, Collin Lane, almost one year old.

His grandparents are Sharon and John Shoemake of Rockdale and Sherry and Tim Pickel of Meredith, New Hampshire.

Aunts and uncles are Kirby Shoemake and wife Kristy of Georgetown and Beth and Pierre Doda of Meredith. Great aunt is Wenda Dyer of Rockdale.

The church will be open for prayer from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The public is invited to join St. John’s members in prayer for Dustin’s surgery, recovery and healing.

“We hope everyone will come as you are from work or from play and stay as long as you want,” said Rev. Rita Simms, St. John’s pastor.

“We all know the power of prayer and the family will appreciate this extra prayer effort.

“The family will be calling the church with updates throughout the day of surgery.

“Those of you who have them, please wear your ‘Team Dustin’ shirts,” she said.

Post-game ‘5th Quarter’ follows home games

Meadowbrook Baptist Church Fellowship Hall (across from the main entrance of Rockdale High School) hosts “5th Quarter” youth fellowships immediately following varsity football home games this season.

“These events are for students 6th through 12th grades, and everyone is invited,” said Ryan Warner, youth minister at Meadowbrook.

Next men’s breakfast Tuesday, Presbyterian

An ecumenical Christian men’s breakfast fellowship is held from 7 to 8 a.m. each second Tuesday, the location rotating between several local churches.

Next breakfast will be held on Oct. 9 at First Presbyterian Church, 1600 Alcoa Avenue.

“All men of the area are invited to attend,” said Bill Avrett, spokesman.

Women of Wisdom retreat set for Oct. 27

Women of Wisdom (WOW) will hold its first annual women’s retreat on Saturday, Oct. 27, sponsored by Gospel of Life Church. Retreat theme will be “Do you know God?”

Speakers will be Pastor Ann Rios, Pastor Shirley Lange and Pastor Adelfa Davis.

Pre-registration will be held through Oct. 18 and there is no fee. Schedule for the Oct. 27 retreat:

Six-week class ahead on Methodist beliefs

Rev. Rita Sims at St. John’s United Methodist Church will teach a six-week class, “United Methodist Beliefs,” beginning Sunday, Oct. 14, at 9:45 a.m. and continuing through Nov. 18.

“It is open to anyone who wants to learn more about United Methodist beliefs, history and structure,” she said.

The class will meet in Wesley Hall, adjacent to the church kitchen. St. John’s is located at 1700 Hillcrest at the corner of Hillcrest and Summit.

Lawrence Chapel UMC chili supper Oct. 13

THORNDALE—The annual Lawrence Chapel United Methodist chili supper will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 in the Lawrence Chapel fellowship hall.

“Come enjoy hot chili, homemade cakes, pies and ice cream,” said Rebecca Garcia, spokesperson.

The church is eight miles south of Thrall on Williamson CR 473.

SAOG Church has new service times

Spanish Assembly of God Church, located at 210 Houston Street in Rockdale has new service times. Spanish services are held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Sundays and English services from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Pastor Max Rosas Sr. ministers during the Spanish services and Mike Zapata the English services.

Worship service and Bible study are held at 7 p.m. Wednesdays. These are in English.

A new Bible study “Battlefield of the Mind” was set to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 3. The public is invited. Youth and children’s services are also held at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Rockdale Aglow Bible Study Oct. 11, 18, 25

Rockdale Aglow Neighborhood Lighthouse will hold a Bible Study on Thursdays, Oct. 11, 18 and 25 from 6-8 p.m. at Rockdale General Store, 1201 W. Highway 79, according to Sabrina Thompson, spokesperson. Bible study leader will be Sherra Floyd Thomas.

Women on Mission of First Baptist

Church met Sept. 19 in the Family Life Center for Bible study, led by Jane Robinson. Attending, in addition to the leader, were Faye Simpson, Elaine Simpson, Barbara Clark, Jane Darwin, Ramona Barlow, Ann Sonntag, Mary Lois Morgan, Margaret Caffey and Gladys Roberts.

It’s that time of year again for the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child gift drive.

Get your shoe boxes, fill them and bring them to the Relay center to go out to children in different parts of the world. The relay center is located at First Baptist in Rockdale.

Collections days are Nov. 12-19. Hours will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9:30 to 11:30 Saturday and Sunday, with extra 5 to 7 p.m. hours Wednesday and Sunday.
