Roddam named new RVFD fire chief Monday

Ward Roddam, a 23-year veteran of the Rockdale Volunteer Fire Depar tment , was named the RVFD’s new fire chief Monday in a business session at the fire station.

The position of chief became vacant after Warren “Dude” Roddam Matous moved to Tennessee after accepting a job with Alcoa.

“We wish him well,” Roddam said.

The new chief had been serving as the RVFD’s first assistant chief for the past five years.

Herbie Vaughan, a former chief, was named first assistant chief of the department, replacing Roddam.

James McQuinn remained second assistant chief.

Two fire calls reported for South Milam VFDs

Fire calls for South Milam County volunteer fire departments dispatched from the Rockdale Police Department over the past week were listed as follows:

• 10:41 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, vehicle smoking, corner of FM 487 and FM 1600, Rockdale VFD, see police and sheriff’s reports, page 3A, for details.

• 7:46 p.m. Monday, unknown type fire reported to Gause VFD, between Gause and Hanover on FM 2095, volunteers unable to locate any fire.

• 8:07 a.m. Saturday, Rockdale VFD dispatched to 2004 Brazos for smell of gas.

Early voting to begin Oct. 22 at four locations

Early voting for the Nov. 6 general election, which features the presidential contest and seven contested county-level or below races, begins Oct. 22.

Sherry Mueck, Milam County Elections Clerk, listed the early voting schedule as follows:

Rockdale Regional Juvenile Justice Center—9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 22-26, Oct. 29-31, Nov. 1-2.

Milam County Clerk’s Office, Cameron—8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Oct. 22-26, Oct. 29-31, Nov. 1-2.

Thorndale Recreational (Firemen’s) Hall—9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 22-26, Oct. 29-31, Nov. 1-2.

Buckholts Community Center—9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Oct. 22-26, Oct. 29-31, Nov. 1-2.

Mueck said the applications for ballots by mail must be received— not postmarked— in the Milam Count Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30.

She cautioned that once early voting has started (Oct. 22), applications for ballot by mail may only be mailed, not hand delivered to the clerk’s office.

Downtown Association sets meeting Nov. 5th

The Rockdale Downtown Association will hold a membership meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, in the Patterson Civic Center, according to Chris Dyess, RDA president.

“Come and join us for fellowship, food and drink, hear our accomplishments and share your interest in the future of downtown Rockdale,” he said.

Thorndale trustees hold FIRST hearing Monday

THORNDALE—School trustees in Thorndale held their required Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) hearing Monday prior to the October board session.

According to Supt. Dr. Craig Spinn, trustees also accepted the district’s textbook committee approved policy updates.

GMA12 planning session set for Milano Oct. 18th

MILANO—Groundwater Management Area 12, which includes the Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District (POSGCD) will gather for a planning session at 10 a.m. Oct. 18 in the Milano Community and Civic Center.

Groundwater districts are required by their enabling legislation to conduct joint public planning sessions to discuss their “desired future conditions” and other aspects of water management.

Gause trustee election will be held on Nov. 6th

GAUSE--There are five persons running for three seats in the Gause ISD school board elections to be held Nov. 6. The community, which is not incorporated, holds no municipal elections so the district schedules trustee voting during the November general election.

Incumbents Henry Bonorden, Chris Cooper and James Todd are met by challengers Linda Hoppe and Tammy Smith.

Early voting will be held during weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 22 through Nov. 2 at the GISD front office.

Election Day voting on Tuesday, Nov. 6 will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Gause Community Center.

Accountability ratings hearing set Monday

The Rockdale ISD will hold a public hearing at 5:15 p.m. Monday, in the Central Administration building to discuss the district’s ongoing districting improvement plan.

In 2011 Rockdale Junior High School and Rockdale High School were rated Academically Unacceptable (AU) under the state accountability system.

Public comments on the report will be accepted.

Monthly flushing set Wednesday, Oct. 10th

Monthly overnight flushing of water lines in both sides of Rockdale is set for Wednesday, Oct. 10, City Manager Kelvin Knauf said.

He urged residents to run cold water taps upon arising Thursday morning.
