‘Scam of the week’ seeks passwords

Another week, another scam attempt in Milam County.

Sheriff David Greene warned Milam residents of an e-mail scam going the rounds, pretending to represent an Internet provider and asking recipients for their account information and passwords.

“An actual Internet provider will not request such information,” Greene said. “If you receive such an e-mail just delete it.”

Two weeks ago text messages were sent to hundreds of cellphone subscribers, supposedly from a large national banking chain, urging them to call a phone number.

Anyone who called was asked by an automated system to provide bank account numbers.

“Once again, no legitimate bank would ask for an account number in such a ma nner,” Greene said.
