Time to ‘Pony up’ a win for Big Blue

0-1 Rockdale and Madisonville fighting for 18-3A survival in Friday matchup

Rockdale could see a path to the post-season with a win over Madisonville when the Tigers host the Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Tiger Field.

But it’s tough to see one if RHS loses.

Rockdale and Madisonville each come into the game 0-1 in district play—Rockdale is 3-4 and Madisonville 4-3 on the year—but Friday’s game means more to Big Blue.

That’s because the Mustangs have already played district favorite, and No. 1-ranked, Navasota last week, falling 38-0.

Big Blue still has to play the Rattlers.

GROUND GAME—“You’ve got to look at our district as three teams, us, Taylor and Madisonville all fighting for second and third place,” Tiger Coach Jeff Miller said.

“We’ve already dropped our game to Taylor and if we go 0-2, with Navasota still to play, that’s a hole its going to be real tough to climb out of,” Miller said.

Junior guard Josh Pelzel graded out highest against Taylor. Junior guard Josh Pelzel graded out highest against Taylor. Madisonville is a run-oriented team that will grind out yardage with the capability of striking quickly.

“They will be a typical Madisonville team, in the I-formation almost the entire time,” Miller said. “And they’ve got excellent team speed.”

Tailback Dontae Crist gets the bulk of the carries and sophomore quarterback Donald Roundtree operates the Pony offense.

On defense the Mustangs feature a familiar name, middle linebacker Damien Whaley.

STAT BATTLE—Friday’s game will feature a battle between the top two rushers in District 18-3A.

Madisonville’s Crist leads all rushers with 943 yards on 149 carries, an average of 6.33 yards.

Tiger Elijah Brooks is second in the cumulative stats but leads Crist in yards-per carry and touchdowns.

Brooks has rushed 103 times for 691 yards. That’s a 6.71 average.

Brooks leads the district with nine touchdowns, while Crist is the runner-up with eight.

GETTING WELL—The Tigers are slowly, but surely getting healthy.

“Hayden Offield played some against Taylor,” Miller said. “Markus Hayes, a real key part of our defense, played against the Ducks but he was still hurting.”

“ We ought to get Dailynn Ramey back this week and have Dedrick Page return from a concussion,” Miller added.

That leaves Darius Ford, Kristian White and Justin Offield still on the injury list.
