County Lions Clubs food drive now under way
Rockdale Noon Lions Club is collecting food for the Rockdale Food Pantry during the Lions countywide food drive, according to Gloria Thrasher, spokesperson.
Non-perishable food is being collected at The Rockdale Reporter at 221 E. Cameron Ave. in downtown Rockdale. The last day for the drive is Nov. 14.
Food may also be collected by any Rockdale Noon Lions member.
Milano Lions and the Milano 4-H Club also collect donations. James Walker is contact person.
Thorndale ISD will participate in a drive beginning Dec. 1, to be donated to Thorndale Cares.
Wanda Lee, Gause 4-H Club manager, is the contact person in that community.
Stash-your-trash day set Nov. 17th at Fair Park
The city of Rockdale’s next Stash Your Trash Day will be from 8 a.m to 12-noon Nov. 17 at Fair Park, City Manager Kelvin Knauf said.
“There will be free disposal of miscellaneous household items, such as old mattresses, furniture, toys and more,” he said.
The city will provide free chipping of tree limbs less than four inches in diameter and brought to the park in a trailer, he said.
No motor oil, tires, batteries, appliances with refrigerant, hazardous chemicals or liquid paint will be accepted.
First Christian plans Thanksgiving luncheon
First Christian Church will again host its annual free Thanksgiving luncheon, according to John Elbert Fischer, spokesman.
“The meal will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, located at the corner of Bell and Scarbrough,” he said.
“Everyone is invited,” Fischer said. “This allows those without the means, or a family, to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner with neighbors and friends.”
Fischer said delivery to shut-ins is also available if reservations are called in by 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 446-5090.
“We are also encouraging people to give monetary donations and volunteer time to help in this community event,” he said.
Anyone wanting to volunteer may call the church at the above number between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, he said.
Rockdale Thanksgiving service at Rising Star
Rising Star Baptist Church will host the 2012 Rockdale Community Thanksgiving Service at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20.
Speaker will be Rev. Leslie Adams, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church.
Music will be by the Rising Star Baptist Church Choir.
The annual service is sponsored by the Rockdale Ministerial Alliance.
Rising Star Baptist Church is located at the north end of Texas Street.
Building Standards Committee cancels
The scheduled meeting of the City Building Standards Commission on Thursday, Nov. 1, was canceled.
The committee’s agenda included possible action on three substandard structures on East Cameron Avenue (US 79).
Milam AD closing for Veterans Day Monday
The Milam Appraisal District (AD) offices in Cameron will close Monday in observance of Veterans Day, according to Chief Appraiser Pat Moraw.
She said the office will reopen on Tuesday.
Hydrant flushing set Nov. 14th in Rockdale
Water lines in Rockdale will be flushed overnight Wednesday, Nov. 14, according to City Manager Kelvin Knauf.
“Please run your cold water taps a few minutes the next morning, upon rising, until the stream runs clear,” he said.
Buddy Oney Toy Run scheduled for Dec. 1st
The annual Buddy Oney Toy Run will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 1, beginning at The Ranch, located at 415 West Hwy 79 in Rockdale, according to Charles Starr, spokesman.
Proceeds and toys will be split between Milam County Child Protective Services (CPS) and Christmas Roundup, he said.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. with first Bike out at 11. Fee is $15 per rider, $20 per rider and passenger or a new toy valued at $20, he said.
This fee will include a meal after the ride for all participants. The meal will be prepared by Brady’s Pest Control and crew.
There will also be a 50/50 drawing, door prizes and DJ music.
Sponsors and stops are Bob’s Steakhouse in Cameron, Cliff’s Tavern in Rockdale, Cyndi’s Hawg Hang Out in Hogg, Nat’s in Milano then back to The Ranch in Rockdale. Last bike in at 4:30 p.m.
