Two house fires, two wrecks for busy VFD

Reporter/Mike Brown It was “one of those weeks” for Rockdale VFD firefighters who were called to two house fires and two major Rockdale wrecks in a six-day period.

Extensive fire damage was reported to the Albert Weller home at 332 Cedar Grove Road in Minerva at 4:04 a.m. Monday.

Weller told The Reporter he was awakened by a fire in the rear of the home and he and three other family members fled outside.

In addition to the Rockdale VFD, volunteers from Minerva and Cameron answered the alarm. Weller said two back bed- rooms were gutted and there was also some damage throughout the remainder of the house. (See photo page 2B).

VACANT—A vacant house which was being demolished at the corner of Third and Upton was destroyed at 12:09 p.m. last Wednesday (Oct. 31).

The Rockda le V FD quickly extinguished the blaze but returned at 8:10 p.m. that evening after being notified trees in the back of the residence had caught on fire.

WRECKS—Volunteers had to use the jaws of life to free a 72-year-old Rockdale man from the wreckage of his 1999 Ford Friday after a three-vehicle crash at West Cameron (US 79) and Calhoun.

Lanny Cravy was treated at Richards Memorial Hospital after being transported by an AMR ambulance crew.

Police said other drivers in the 1:28 p.m. crash were Nora Blakely, 47, of Rockdale, in a 2008 Ford pickup and Lisa Jeter, 36, of Rockdale, in a 1992 Chevrolet pickup.

Damages were termed extensive to all three vehicles.

Two days prev iously, f irefighters, police and AMR had answered another major wreck call on West Cameron, 10 blocks away from Friday’s crash.

Police said a 1999 Chevrolet driven by Misty Grabener, 35, of Rockdale, was in collision with a Pontiac sedan driven by Bettyna Lopez, 19, of College Station, at 1:57 p.m. Oct. 31.

Damages were termed extensive to both vehicles. (See photo page 3A).

MORE CALLS—Rockdale firefighters also checked out a report of a dryer on fire at Coin Laundry on East Cameron (US 79).

The Rockdale VFD was initially called to a report of a fire at Sandow Power Plant Unit 4 at 3:12 p.m. Oct. 31 but that fire was extinguished by the time firefighters arrived.

Other South Milam County fire calls during the past week included:

• 7:34 p.m. Oct 30, smoke report on Whip-O-Will Drive, Rockdale VFD, turned out to be controlled burn.

• 5:27 p.m. Thursday, grass fire call for Gause VFD, false alarm.
