Mitchell returns to save the day in Tuesday’s win
The Rockdale Lady Tigers’ loss in the championship game of the lady Tiger Classic was tempered by the return of sophomore guard Velma Mitchell.
The Lady Tigers fell to Robinson 67-29 in the finale after defeating Thrall 27-15 and Austin Lanier 52-10.
With a 45-41 victory over Academy Tuesday night, the Lady Tigers improved to 4-5 on the young season. Full Story

Mitchell’s 33 lifts Tigers over Lexington Tuesday
The Rockdale Tigers suffered their first loss of the season which cost them a shot at their own Tiger Classic championship.
The Tigers settled for third after defeating Georgetown Gateway 60-38 and Caldwell 73-51 before being edged by Brenham 66-63.
Brenham went unbeaten through the tournament to capture first place, while Robinson was second in the six-team tournament. Full Story
Navasota, Cameron still in hunt
Area teams Cameron and Navasota are still in the state championship hunt and will face opponents in the quarterfinal action this weeknd.
The No. 2 Yoemen (12-0) will battle Halletsville (12-0) in Bastrop on Friday in Class 2A, Division I.

Eagles drop first game of the year
It takes overtime for Caldwell to shake Milano
MILANO—The No. 14 Milano Eagles suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Class 3A Caldwell Hornets on Tuesday night at Geneva Paceley Gym, falling 53-47 in overtime.
The 6-1 Eagles led 28-21 at the half, but were outscored 10-4 in the third for the Hornets to cut the deficit to just one headed into the final quarter. Full Story
Milano’s Guthrie named All-State in volleyball
MILANO—Lady Eagle senior outside hitter Stonie Guthrie has been named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s Class A All- State volleyball team and to the group’s academic all-state squad.
Guthrie, who was recently named District 16A MVP, led Milano to the regional quarterfinals, where they lost to state semifinalist Cayuga. Full Story

Former Tiger coach Cook dies at 84
TEMPLE—Eddie Cook, a Rockdale Tiger coach who was a part of the 1962 state finalist team, died Nov. 29 at his residence in Temple at age 84.
Services for Cook were held Monday in Holland Cemetery in Holland.
Cook was head coach Ray Birchfield’s only assistant as the Tigers went 14-1 and played in the state championship game in 1962, losing to Jacksboro. Full Story
Lady Dogs fall to Class 3A Smithville; Turnovers plague Lady Eagles in loss
Thorndale takes third at Lady Tiger Classic area basketball
The No. 14 Thorndale Lady Dogs (7-3) were on the road Tuesday night to face Class 3A and No. 18 Smithville in non-district play and fell 60-40.
Heather Butterworth led the Lady Dogs with 12 points on the night. Kamryn Holder and Iris Leyendecker each added six points. Full Story
