Former Tiger coach Cook dies at 84

TEMPLE—Eddie Cook, a Rockdale Tiger coach who was a part of the 1962 state finalist team, died Nov. 29 at his residence in Temple at age 84.

Services for Cook were held Monday in Holland Cemetery in Holland.

Cook was head coach Ray Birchfield’s only assistant as the Tigers went 14-1 and played in the state championship game in 1962, losing to Jacksboro.

He grew up in West Virginia and served in the U.S. Air Force, based in both Kentucky and Texas. He was a teacher and a coach, taking positions in Corsicana, Rockdale, George West, McAllen and Slaton over his 38 year career.

He retired in 1983 and moved to Temple. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joy; and a son. Survivors include two sons, Kelly Cook of Frisco and Terry Cook of Buda; and four grandchildren.
