South Milam UW seeks recipients for 2013 drive

The United Way of South Milam County is seeking eligible recipients to receive funds in 2013.

Charitable organizations with an IRS 501-3C status are eligible and all organization funds must be distributed in Milam County.

Information must include the organization’s name, address, contact person, contact phone numbers and 3-mail and should be sent to the following:

UWSMC Secretary, Funding Request, PO Box 189, Rockdale, TX 76567.

Thorndale Cares plans 2012 Christmas drive

THORNDALE—Thorndale Cares, the annual Christmas cheer drive for the needy in the Thorndale area is gearing up for its 2012 effort, according to Susan Sekaquaptewa, spokesperson.

She said donations of food, toys and coats are needed for this years drive.

Application forms nominating families to be served by Thorndale Cares are available from Sekaquaptewa at Thorndale Elementary School.

She said on Friday, Dec. 21, Thorndale High School honor students will pack boxes of donated items in the TISD lunchroom. Boxes will be delivered on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 22.

“Anyone and everyone is welcome to help with any of these activities,” she said..

Brown Santa signup deadline is Monday

Monday (Dec. 17) is the deadline to sign up for the Milam County Sheriff’s Department Brown Santa toy giveaway for 2012.

The annual program sponsors toys for children.

Signup forms are available from the sheriff’s department, 512 North Jefferson in Cameron.

Delivery date is Friday Dec. 21.

Drivers escape injury in Milano accident

Both drivers escaped injury in a two vehicle collision at a Milano intersection Friday, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Falls County State Trooper Joshua Cashion said vehicles operated by Mary Weathers of Troy and Kerry Schlemmer of Rockdale were in collision at 2:29 p.m. at the US 79-Texas 36 intersection.

Cashion said moderate damage was reported to the Weathers vehicle and there was no damage to the Schlemmer vehicle.

Alcoa retirees schedule Christmas get-together

The annual Christmas meeting of Alcoa retirees is set for 4 p.m. Thursday (Dec. 13) at the Alcoa Lake Training Center, according to Doug Williams, spokesman.

He said setup is at 4 p.m., doors open at 5 with the meal at 6.

“All Alcoa retirees and surviving spouses are eligible to attend,” he said.

Also, all “name groups” are asked to bring desserts and there will be no gift exchange at the meeting, Williams said.

Milano ISD combines two-month meeting

MILANO--Milano ISD met Thursday in what served as combined November-December meetings at the MHS library.

Board members approved a resolution allowing the district to retain the right to exercise eminent domain.

Trustees also heard a school finance lawsuit update from Supt. Robert Westbrook and set a special Jan. 21 meeting for board training.

The school board’s next regular scheduled meeting will be Jan 24, according to Westbrook.

Health department still has flu vaccine in Milam

CAMERON—The Milam County Health Department still has flu vaccine available for any Milam resident needing flu shots, according to Diane Leftwich, spokesperson.

Flu shots are free to those with Medicare Part B while cost to other adults is $20.

Surplus food giveaway changes site this month

Due to a scheduling conflict, for one month only Rockdale’s third-Thursday surplus food distribution will change from the KC Hall parking lot to Waymar Plaza (old Walmart).

This month’s distribution will be held on Dec. 20 and the hours will remain 9 to 10 a.m.

Police plan brisket fund raiser for December 21

Rockdale Police will hold a “whole brisket” fund raiser Friday Dec. 21 at the police department.

Price is $10.50 per pound, briskets will be between 4 and 7 pounds and can be picked up, vacuum-sealed at the department during the afternoon once they’ve cooled off, according to police.

Briskets will come with a pint of barbecue sauce.

Orders must be placed by Dec. 14 and only 30 briskets can be prepared. Call J D. Newlin or Shana Goodrich at 446-3436.

Proceeds will go the Rockdale Police Department’s Officer of the Year fund.

‘Tree of Angels’ slated Wednesday in Cameron

CAMERON—The Milam County and District Attorney’s Office will sponsor its annual “Tree of Angels” ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Milam County Museum.

Members of the armed services will also be remembered and honored during the ceremony.

“All military families are invited to attend and place an angel on the tree, in honor of or in remembrance of their military loved one,” Sparks said.

Sparks said the public is invited to attend the ceremony “to support and remember victims of violent crime and our fallen and injured soldiers throughout our Texas communities.”
