Navasota, Cameron one step away

Both Cameron and Navasota are one victory away from playing for a state championship.

Cameron (13- 0) will battle Newton (13-0) in the Class 2A, Division I state semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Woodlands’ Woodforest Bank Stadium.

Cameron handled Hallettsville 38-19 in the quarterfinals to keep playing. Newton advanced by beating Franklin 49-13.

The Cameron-Newton winner will advance to the state championship game set for noon, Dec. 21 at Cowboys Stadium to face the winner of the Daingerfield-Wall game.

Cameron—which last won a state championship in 1981—lost to Daingerfield 33-27 in the state championship game in 2010 on a last-second play.

No. 1-ranked Navasota will play Bellville in the state semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday in Waller.

The Navasota (14-0) and Bellville (11-3) winner will move on to the Class 3A Division II state championship game, which will also be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on Friday, Dec. 21. to challenge the Graham Gilmer winner.

Navasota whipped West Orange-Stark 38-7 on Friday in the Region III finale.

Bellville punished Port Isabel 22-0 on Saturday night in Corpus Christi for the Region IV title.

The Rattlers’ only appearance in a state championship game was a loss to Southlake Carroll in 1988.
