Split vote finalizes hotel-motel tax hike
Rate adjustment from 5.5 to 7 percent is third change in past two-and-one-half years
On a 4-1 split vote last Wednesday the Rockdale city council gave final (second reading) approval to an increase in the city’s hotel-motel tax.
Council members Toby Johnson, Colby Fisher, Doug Calame and Joyce Dalley voted in favor of the increase from 5.5 to 7 percent while councilman Willie Phillips voted against.

TEMPORARY HOME—Patrons of and volunteers for, the monthly surplus food distribution by the Capital Area Food Bank had a new location Thursday. The distribution was held in the “old Walmart” parking lot at Way-Mar Plaza. That’s because the KC Hall, the usual home for the surplus food distribution, was being used for Christmas Roundup. Rockdale’s first baby of 2013 is on the way, it’s just that nobody yet knows who he or she is.

Reception to honor Jaecks
A reception to honor outgoing Precinct 3 Commissioner Dale Jaecks will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday Jan. 4 at the Milam County Courthouse.
Location is the commissioners courtroom on the first floor.
The courthouse is located at 102 South Fannin in downtown Cameron.
Jaecks is retiring Monday (Dec. 31) after 24 years as Precinct 3 commissioner. Full Story
MDD directors discuss grant application
Directors of the Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD), meeting Thursday in regular session at City Hall, heard an update on a grant application targeting the downtown area.
Tom Manskey, MDD executive director, said the grant is being written by former Cameron City Manager Janet Sheguit. Full Story

Con artist lets slip what makes crooks tick
Jim, a con artist, was interv iewed and what was revealed could protect senior citizens from harm.
Jim did not want to work with stupid people. He targeted doctors, lawyers, engineers and college professors. These people had money to invest and Jim wanted the money.
