Lafferty

CAMERON—Funeral services for Rev. James E. Lafferty, 85, of Cameron were held Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at First Baptist Church in Cameron. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Rev. Lafferty died Friday, Dec. 28, in a Cameron hospital.

He was born May 19, 1927, in Kellyville, Oklahoma, to Rufus Homer and Ada Belle (Hurd) Lafferty.

He married Doris Myers on Dec. 20, 1948.

Rev. Lafferty served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II serving in the Philippines.

He was a graduate of the University of Houston and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Rev. Lafferty served pastorates in churches in Fort Worth, Smithfield, Tyler and at First Baptist Church of Cameron from 1963 until 1975. He served as interim pastor at New Baden, Calvert and San Gabriel.

Rev. Lafferty was the director of Missions FIRM Baptist Area from 1975 until 1992.

His civ ic responsibilities included the Cameron Lions Club, where he served as president in 1969; the Cameron Chamber of Commerce, serving as president in 1970; the Cameron Volunteer Ambulance Service in 1985 and 1986; Cameron City Council member from 1986 until 1990; and Cameron mayor from 1992 until 2004.

Rev. Lafferty held memberships in the Cameron Industrial Foundation Executive Board, City of Cameron Planning Commission, Milam County Emergency Food Committee, Milam County Volunteer Juvenile Probation Officer and Counselor, Milam County Health Department Advisory Group, Cameron Chairman of the Bicentennial Committee and was named the Citizen of the year by the Chamber of Commerce in 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Lafferty of Cameron; and two sons, Jim Lafferty and wife Toni, Dale Lafferty and wife Cindy, all of Cameron; also, five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
