The retirement reception for outgoing Milam County Precinct 3 Commissioner Dale Jaecks of Rockdale, Friday in the Milam County Courthouse, was so huge it spilled out of the commissioners courtroom and into the hall. Jaecks (center above and at right sharing a laugh with former District Judge Ed Magre) did not seek re-election on 2012 after serving in the office for 24 years. Full Story
Arrest, others sought in 50-person cockfight
One man was arrested, 28 citations issued and 12 more charges are anticipated after the Milam County Sheriff’s Department led a raid on a cockfighting tournament Sunday morning in the Gause area.
Chief Deputy Chris White said Sheriff David Greene, deputies, Precinct 1 Constable John Anderle and DPS State Troopers converged or a County Road 353 location. Full Story
IN THE DARK—Oncor crews repair a transformer in an alley behind Texas Burger during a power outage that affected about half of Rockdale, including the entire downtown area, during the noon hour Tuesday. Lt. J. D. Newlin of the Rockdale Police Department said police were on emergency power during the outage, which lasted almost an hour, and fielded numerous calls from the public. Full Story
Sandow 5th on environmental group’s mercury-emitters list
Luminant: ‘Units meet or outperform state/federal laws’
Luminant’s Sandow Steam Electric Station (Units 4 and 5) was ranked fifth nationwide for mercury emissions last week in a listing by an environmental activist group.
The Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) listed Sandow behind three other Luminant Texas facilities, and an Alabama plant, in its list of the “Toxic 10” for mercury emissions. Full Story
C of C annual meeting Thursday at Clubhouse
The public is invited to the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce’s 2013 annual meeting Thursday, Jan. 10, beginning at noon at the New Salem Clubhouse at Fair Park.

Milano Junior High one-act play to compete, perform
Milano Junior High’s oneact play will perform “Curious Savage” at UIL competition at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10 at Temple College. Then on Thursday, Jan. 17, the group will hold a public performance at the MHS cafetorium starting at 7 p.m.
Admission wi ll be $3 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens. There will also be a silent auction at the event. Full Story
Bringing in new year with fun
Happy New Year. Hope you all had a great New Year’s Eve. We visited with family members in the home of Renee’ and Jerry Vinton and children and had a great time. When we went Wayne said, “I don’t want to stay too late.” Well, by the time we got home and in the bed it was 2 a.m. Full Story
