SHERIFF’S REPORT

Burlgary, arson are suspected in Monday fire

A Monday night house fire on County Road 374 near Milano has investigators suspecting burglary and arson. Milam County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Chad Marek said that some items were missing from the residence and that the state fire marshal’s office has been contacted to investigate the cause of the fire.

The two-story home belonged to Steve Howard of Houston and is used as a “weekend home,” Marek said. Several neighbors called in the fire when the flames became visible.

Milano Volunteer Fire Department chief Jesse Love said that when firemen arrived the house was fully engulfed and already starting to cave in.

MV FD had three units on scene and called on Gause VFD for assistance, with them bringing two units and manpower, Love said.

No origin of the fire has been found, Love added.

The initial tone went out at 9:10 p.m. and firemen left the scene just after midnight.
