Ortega

Military graveside services for John Ortega, 80, of Rockdale were held Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale with Deacon Gus Coelho officiating.

Mr. Ortega died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, in Olin Teague V.A. Hospital in Temple.

He was born June 23, 1932, in Rockdale to Everado and Felipa (Zamora) Ortega.

Mr. Ortega was a lifelong resident of Rockdale.

He graduated from Rockdale High School and Nixon School College.

He married Rose Longoria, on March 2, 1953, in Fort Worth.

Mr. Ortega served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1952 to 1954.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Thomas and Rudy Ortega; and a sister, Reyes Aldama.

Survivors are his wife, Rose Ortega of Rockdale; four daughters, Janie Ortega, Yolanda Carter and husband Gene, all of Houston, Norma Jean Bruce, Mary Ellen Stewart and husband James, all of Rockdale; and a sister, Elnora O. “Livo” Mata of Dallas; also six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Michael Ortega, Gene Carter I, Robert Ortega, Brett Johnson, Joe Mata and Henry Zamora.

Honorary pallbearers were Pete Garcia, Gene Carter II, James Stewart and Gilbert Gamez.

The burn ban for Milam County has been lifted. Burning is always prohibited in the county's municipalities.
