2013 Relay for Life kickoff set Sunday

The 2013 Relay For Life of Milam County season will be kicked off Sunday, Jan. 20 from 2 until 4 p.m. at Becky’s Sandwich Shop in Rockdale (corner of FM 908 and US 77).

“Please join us in celebrating more birthdays by having cake and ice cream while we discuss this year’s event which will be held May 3 at the Cameron Junior High School athletic field,” said Tiffany Parker, Relay chair.

“We will help teams and survivors register and answer any questions that anyone may have about Relay,” she added.

Milano Opry kicking off 2013 Saturday at MHS

MILANO—Celebrate the New Year with the Milano Opry on Saturday, Jan. 19 at Milano High School.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show will start at 7. Admission is $7 while kids 10 and under get in free, according to Lynn Martin, organizer.

“Come early and eat hamburgers and barbecue sandwiches (BBQ cooked by Lee’s Landing in Rockdale), along with homemade pies,” Martin said.

Guest performers are Glenda Cheek and Rodney Brosette. House band members are Michael Herod, Ab Woods, Michael Wall, Billy Barnett, Will Fountain, Johnny Foster and Lynn Martin with Donny White as emcee.

“Load up the car and come see ‘a big Show in a small town’,” Martin said.

Genealogy society to meet here Tuesday

Milam County Genealogical Society will hold its first meeting of 2013 at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22 in the Citizens National Bank conference room in Rockdale.

Charles Hubert will present a report on Texas Ranger Tales, a book that he received at the society’s Christmas party last month.

Also on the agenda will be nomination and election of officers. Members and potential members should make sure their dues are paid by the Tuesday meeting to be able to vote.

Fees are: Individual $15, family $20, senior citizen $10, and supporting membership $25. Dues may be paid at any meeting or at the city library.—Linda Whorton, publicity

Grief support group for teens now meeting

A grief support group for teens ages 12-18 meets each first Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Rockdale High School Library. The group is for those who are coping with the loss of a family member or close friend.

“All teens are welcome, including those who are just beginning the grief journey and those who have been on it awhile. Goal is to find healing through an opportunity to ask questions and share with peers who are going through the same experience,” said Deborah L. Bland, LCSW, facilitator.

There is no charge and light refreshments are served.

Bulldog Band BBQ chicken fund-raiser

THORNDALE—A take-out only BBQ chicken dinner fund-raiser will be held on Sunday, Jan. 20, beginning at 11 a.m. at Thorndale Fireman’s Hall, according to Starla Hall, spokesperson.

Proceeds benefit the Thorndale Bulldog band.

Menu includes: BBQ chicken, beans, noodles, bread, pickles, onions and dessert for $8 per plate.

Sunshine quilters to meet January 24

Sunshine ‘n Shadows Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 24 in fellowship hall of Meadowbrook Baptist Church. Members will be planning projects for the year, according to Eddie Davidson, publicist. Visitors are welcome. FMI: 446- 6316.

Grief support meetings held monthly, Cameron

Relay For Life sets golf tourney March 16

CAMERON—Relay For Life of Milam County will hold a golf tournament on March 16 at Cameron Country Club, 1901 East 21st Street.

The two-person scramble event will start with an 8 a.m. tee time. Skins are optional, and entry fee is $70 per person (includes cart) or $60 per person (without cart). An awards ceremony will follow.
