RISE UP—The first annual Rise Up youth rally, sponsored by the Rockdale Spanish Assembly of God, was held Jan. 12 in the Rockdale Junior-High School commons with about 60 in attendance. This was the first year of the Rise Up event which organizers plan to stage annually. St. Paul to hold annual BBQ meal, auction Sunday

THORNDALE— St . Paul Lutheran Church will hold its annual barbeque brisket dinner and auction on Sunday, Jan. 27, with serving to start at 11 a.m. at Thorndale Fireman’s Hall.


INSTALLED— St. Paul Lutheran Church, Thorndale, installed Pastor Scott Schaller as associate pastor Sunday. He previously served as pastor of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Gun Barrel City and becomes the sixth pastor installed at St. Paul in the congregation’s 123-year history. He will serve with Pastor Jim Mann with a ministry focus in the youth, young adults and young families. A welcoming and light luncheon was served following the installation. “St. Paul welcomes Pastor Scott, his wife Lisa and children, Wyatt, Marisol and Rileigh to the community,” Pastor Mann said. “Bring your friends and enjoy the meal and the live auction at 12:30,” said Angie Becker, event publicity chair.

Thrivent Financial will provide matching funds.

“The church and school both will benefit from this dinner and auction,” Becker said. “There will be dine-in or takeout plates available and also senior citizen delivery in Thorndale.”

Youth Rally planned Wednesday, Jan.30

First Baptist Church, Meadowbrook Baptist Church and Red Door Church will sponsor a youth rally for junior and senior high age youth on Wednesday, Jan. 30 in the Rockdale High School gym, according to Ken Ansell, organizer.

It’s called “ The Life Book Event,” and every student attending will receive a free Life Book.

The rally starts at 6 p.m. and the speaker will be Mark Hoover with The Journey Church in Killeen. Music will be provided by Joshua from Dallas.

Rising Star Baptist lists events for month

Rising Star Baptist Church, 1022 Texas Street, has scheduled the following events:

• Saturday, Jan. 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.—Church leadership conference.

• Sunday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m.— Leadership recognition service. Guest speaker Dr. Gaynor Yancey, Baylor University.

• Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.—Black History observance, sponsored by RSBC youth department.

• Feb. 24 at 3 p.m.—Pastor and wife appreciation program.

• Saturday, March 23—Fourth annual RSBC golf tournament, Blackhawk Golf Club, 2714 Kelly Lane, Pflugerville. Registration 11:30 a.m., shotgun start 1:30.

• Bible study at 7 p.m. each Wednesday.—Jo Ann Bradford, publicist.

St. Thomas hosting video lecture series

“Confucius, Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad” is the topic of a video lecture/discussion series held Sunday mornings this month at St. Thomas Episcopal Church parish hall, 302 East Davilla Street (Davilla at Green Street) in Rockdale.

The event is held from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. and the public is invited. The video presentation is hosted by Mark W. Muesse, PhD, Harvard University.

Methodists to host next men’s breakfast

An ecumenical monthly men’s Christian fellowship breakfast is held from 7 until 8 a.m. each second Tuesday, the site rotating between several local churches. Next breakfast will be Feb. 12 at St. John’s United Methodist Church fellowship hall.

Purpose is Christian fellowship and all men of the Rockdale area are invited, according to Bill Avrett, spokesman.

RCS thrift store volunteers listed

Rockdale Christian Services Heavenly Treasures thrift store serving the needy at 233 North Main Street is staffed by volunteers from RCS members churches. Church assignments through February are as follows:
