Six more arrests made in Gause cockfight case

CAMERON—Six more persons have been arrested in connection with a Jan. 6 cockfighting raid near Gause.

Arrested during the past week were:

• Michael Anthony Martinez, 48, College Station, cockfighting, space/owns/trains/equips, released after posting $4,000 bond.

• Leonardo Reyes, 26, Caldwell, cockfighting, space/owns/ trains/equips, released after posting $4,000 bond.

• Mark Brian Corona, 33, Cameron, cockfighting, space/owns/ trains/equips, released after posting $4,000 bond.

• Alberto Ramirez-Barvosa, 33, Bryan, cockfighting, space/ owns/trains/equips, released after posting $4,000 bond.

• Er iber to Benav idez, 27, Houston, cockfighting, space/ owns/trains/equips, released after posting $4,000 bond.

• Candace Elyse Byrd, 46, Gause, cockfighting, causes or earns, in custody.

• Nathan Ross Bishop, 32, Gause, cockfighting, causes or earns, in custody.

Sherif f Dav id Greene said about 50 people were at a County Road 353 location for a cockfighting tourney when several law enforcement agencies staged a raid. “A number of persons ran into the woods,” he said.

One man was arrested at the scene, deputies rounded up about 35 people and issued 28 citations, seized 43 gamecocks and numerous fighting equipment pieces and towed seven vehicles.
