City talks tourism, lodging promotion
The Rockdale City Council, in a Monday workshop, gathered information from two firms who want to contract with the city to promote tourism and lodging in the city.
Council members can’t take any action in workshops. A decision on which of the firms, if any, might be hired would have to be an agenda item at a subsequent council meeting.
Miller Ad Agency of Dallas and Orasi Development in Fort Worth, made detailed “requests for proposals” (RFPs) outlining services they offered in promoting Rockdale.
In previous years the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce administered funds generated through the city’s hotel motel tax.
But late last year the Chamber’s executive board decided it would not continue to administer those funds.
The city has been approving requests from groups seeking funding to keep activities such as the March 1-2 Tejas Festival going in 2013.
One of those groups was the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, which received $16,000 in funds, allowing it to continue staffing one office position and remain open as a visitor center.
If an entity such as those making proposals Monday is retained by the city, it’s presumed that group would be responsible for developing and placing ads and assisting event organizers in promoting such events.
It’s envisioned the Chamber of Commerce would continue to answer calls and handle walk-in traffic.
