KC’s Lenten Fish Fry to begin this Friday

A Rockdale Lenten tradition, Knights of Columbus Council 7014’s annual “every Friday in Lent” fish fry begins Feb. 15 at the KC Hall. Hours are 5 to 7:30 p.m. or until sold out.

Plates, prices at $8 each, interlude fried fish, homemade fries, hush puppies, slaw, green beans, trimmings, tea and dessert.

Black Jack VFD plans chili and cake auction

The Black Jack Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual chili supper and cake auction Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Black Jack Fire Station on FM 908 between Rockdale and Caldwell.

Serving begins at 5 p.m. with the cake auction at 6. Supper tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children 2 to 12.

Rotary sets annual lawn fertilizer sales

Rockdale Rotary Club members are launching their annual lawn fertilizer sales which raises funds for the club’s annual awarding of scholarships to deserving Rockdale High School seniors.

The sale, plus a spring golf tournament, are the club’s two main fund-raisers. Last year, the Rotarians awarded $11,000 in scholarships.

Kerry Starnes, sales chair, said the 40-pound bags of the 15-5-10 product remain priced at $13 per bag. The blend is recommended for Rockdale’s sandy soils. “It performs well for St. Augustine, Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, Blue Grass, Carpet, Buffalo and other lawn types,” Starnes said.

Sales will continue through February. Rotarians will deliver the fertilizer to buyers’ homes or businesses about March 1 and 2.

County honors retiring commissioner Monday

CAMERON—Milam County Commissioners on Monday honored outgoing Precinct 1 Commissioner George Tomek during his final meeting with them.

Tomek resigned his office after accepting a job with an asphalt company, effective on Thursday.

Last week, County Judge Dave Barkemeyer appointed Chuck “ Tank” Balch of Cameron as Tomek’s replacement.

Balch had run against Tomek in last year’s Republican Primary, a race incumbent Tomek won by 23 votes.

Commercial shredder available on March 8th

A commercial cross-shredder will be at the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce grounds, 1203 West Cameron Avenue, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday, March 8 for use by the public.

The shredder’s visit to Rockdale is again being co-sponsored as a community service by the Chamber and the Rotary Club.

Use of the shredder is free to individuals. Businesses will pay 16 cents a pound.

Businesses are asked to call the Chamber, 446-2030, if they plan to bring documents for shredding.

Community Theatre to host cast auditions

CAMERON—Auditions are being scheduled for parts in the next production on the Milam Community Theatre, according to Kyle Deal, president of the MCT board of directors.

Deal said the little theatre company will produce “Charley’s Aunt” later this year and will host casting calls/auditions for the play at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 and 20 in the Williams Civic Center.

“Everyone trying out will do cold reads directly from the script,” Deal, who will direct the play said.

“Everyone interested in playing a role is welcome to come out to our auditions and take part in Milam Community Theatre’s 20th year,” he said.
