JUDGE’S COMMENTS

New legislators now on the job in Austin
David Barkemeyer
Milam County Judge

Our new state representatives are off to a busy start in Austin as the new legislative session kicks off.

The Youngbloods and Barkemeyers were present in the senate gallery as our new State Sen. Dr. Charles Schwertner was sworn in along with his colleagues on Jan. 8 while across on the other side of the capitol Dr. Marsha Farney was being sworn in as Milam County’s new state representative.

We are fortunate to have these two individuals representing us who take a personal interest in us and what goes on here in Milam County.

While I was there on Jan. 29 participating in an Association of Counties Legislative Day, our state champion Cameron Yoemen were being recognized on the floor of the legislature for their accomplishments thanks to a ceremony arranged by Marsha and Charles.

Dr. Farney is also arranging a special posthumous recognition by the legislature for Christine Holcombe for her work for the youth of the county in 4H which will be coming up soon.

Both have visited with me to discuss county business and have attended Commissioner’s Court meetings this past year.

Dr. Schwertner will serve during this session as vice-chairman of the senate committee on Government Organization and has also been appointed to the state Agriculture Committee, the Health and Human Services Committee, and the Criminal Justice Committee.

Dr. Farney will serve on the important house Public Education Committee, the Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence Committee, and the Local and Consent Calendars Committee.

I have visited with both of them and their chiefs-of staff in their capitol offices and will be doing so from time to time throughout the session as the need arises.

If any of you have issues you want to discuss with our representatives, you may contact their offices direct or if you want me to make contact for you, I am available to assist you.

Dr. Schwertner’s office at the capitol is E1-608, his chief-ofstaff is Tom Holloway, the phone number is 512-463-0105.

Dr. Farney’s office is E1-310, her chief-of-staff is Aaron Gibson, phone number is 512-463- 0309. dbarkemeyer@milamcounty.net
