Blood drawing Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran
THORNDALE—The Scott & White Bloodmobile will be on the campus of St. Paul Lutheran Church/School on Sunday, Feb. 24 from 8 a.m. until noon.
To preregister as a donor, call Teresa Ging at 512-924-0151. Walkins are also welcome.
Donors will receive a T-shirt, a free pound of chocolate chip cookie dough with the purchase of a pizza from Papa Murphy’s Pizza ($2 off any regular price pizza for all blood donors), a chance to win a $50 gift card from Academy Sports & Outdoors, and a chance to win two tickets to a San Antonio’s Spurs basketball game.
St. Paul will host six drives in 2013: Feb. 24, April 21, June 16, Aug. 11, Oct 6 and Dec. 1. At year’s end, a drawing will take place for a quilt made of blood donor T-shirts. Each time a donor participates in a blood drive his or her name will be added to the drawing.
‘Garden of Hope’ kickoff Wednesday
Rising Star Baptist Church, 1055 Texas Street in Rockdale, will sponsor a community “Garden of Hope” with everyone invited to a kickoff meeting at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27.
“We hope everyone in the community will get involved,” said Rev. Royal Johnson, pastor, and James Bradford, project chair.
Purpose, they said, is to provide affordable or free fresh produce and encourage families in the community and students to grow their own food. “The garden will educate the community by bringing gardeners closer in touch with the source of their food and by creating a social community,” Bradford said.
“This garden will create an opportunity for recreation, exercise, therapy and education,” he said. “Gardening experts will also be available to answer questions and provide resources, guidance and workshops.”

Methodist Men’s chili supper set February 28
The Methodist Men will hold their annual chili supper on Thursday, Feb. 28 from 5 until 7 p.m. in the St. John’s United Methodist Church fellowship hall.
Tickets will be $7 each, are being sold by Methodist Men, and will be available at the doors.
Women of St. John’s will provide home-baked desserts for this event.
Easter Holy Week luncheons at FBC
Rockdale Ministerial Alliance will sponsor its annual noon-hour Community Holy Week luncheon services March 25-29 in the First Baptist Church Family Life Center.
Each meeting features sandwiches and finger foods provided by participating local churches, plus music, scripture and a short Holy Week message brought by various local clergy.
IMAP Church to hold Friday fund-raisers
Mundo Apostólico Pentecostés Church will sell to-go dinner plates as a fund-raiser on Fridays through the end of March.
This Friday they will be selling Chili Rellenos plates for $7 and they will include rice, beans and homemade flour tortillas.
Serving will begin at 10 a.m. Tickets will be available at the door or call-in orders ahead to 979-450- 9280. The church is located at 586 Ackerman.
‘Family Matters’ event March 6 at St. John’s
St. John’s United Methodist Church will host a “Family Matters” program at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, geared towards parents, preteens and teenagers with behavior and discipline issues.
The program will begin with a snack supper at 6 p.m. and at 6:30 a panel of speakers will be featured. Location is the St. John’s fellowship hall.
Speakers will include Probation Officer Daniel Wheeler, Counselor Angela White and Justice of the Peace Andy Isaacs.
“Rare indeed is the parent who avoids discipline problems in today’s world,” noted Rev. Rita Sims, St. John’s pastor. She said families will receive help from local resources with helpful ideas to avoid problems and pitfalls.
“Come and receive valuable information from these local speakers. A nursery will be provided,” Rev. Sims said.

Whitlee Casey Band at Rockdale Christian
The Whitlee Casey Band will be leading the Rockdale Christian Church Youth Group in worship at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, according to Tim Ramey, youth minister.

Next men’s breakfast at Apostolic Faith Church
An ecumenical monthly men’s Christian fellowship breakfast is held from 7 until 8 a.m. each second Tuesday, the site rotating between several local churches. Next breakfast will be March 12 at Apostolic Faith Church, 400 West Davilla.
Purpose is Christian fellowship and all men of the Rockdale area are invited, according to Bill Avrett, spokesman.
