Filing period heads into final week
With just over one week to go before the March 1 city council and school board filing deadline, it appears potential Rockdale candidates in several races are playing their hands close to the vest.
Entering the final week of filing for the May 11 city and municipal elections there are still no candidate for mayor of Rockdale or for two of the three Rockdale school board positions.
Anf first-term Mayor Dr. Larry. Jones has said he won’t run.
CITY COUNCIL—One contested race on the Rockdale May 11 ballot is guaranteed.
A pair of first-time candidates, Trent Wages and Nathan Bland, have signed up for the west ward council position currently held by Toby Johnson.
There’s one candidate, so far, for east ward. Robert Lawhon is seeking the position now held by Joyce Dalley.
But at presstime, there were still no filings for mayor.
That position is currently held by Dr. Larry Jones, who said Wednesday he won’t file for another term this year.
Filing continues weekdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at City Hall.
SCHOOL BOARD—There’s still only one candidate for the Rockdale ISD school board.
Place 5 incumbent Wenda Jo Dyer is seeking a second term. She was first elected in 2010.
The term of the board’s most tenured member, Place 4 incumbent and trustee president Lee Jenkins, is expiring this spring.
Jenkins was first elected in 2001 and was re-elected in 2004, 2007 and 2010.
He is completing his first term as board president, replacing the retiring James Birkhead in 2010.
Also expiring is the term of incumbent Michelle Lehmkuhl, who is completing her second term, having first been elected in 2007 and re-elected in 2010.
School board filing is weekdays 7:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. in the Central Administration Building, 520 West Davilla.
MILANO—All the incumbents in Milano, both city and school, are now on the May 11 ballot.
City council members Carol Newman and Henry Dykes signed up during the past week, joining incumbent David Gunnels Jr. on the ballot in what is so far a three-candidate race for three positions.
It’s the same in the Milano ISD where the four incumbents are seeking new terms and are unopposed heading to the final week.
Carl Blake, Dewey Steinbecker and Lynette Taylor are seeking new three-year terms, while Shawn Walton has signed up for a two-year term.
Both city and school filing is weekdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the superintendent’s office behind the elementary school.
THORNDALE—So far, Mayor Billy Simank is the only candidate on either the Thorndale city or school ballot.
Also expiring in the City of Thorndale are the terms of council members Don Culp and Stephanie Churchman.
Filing is weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at City Hall.
Still blank is the Thorndale ISD ballot where terms of board president David Hall and trustees Brian Fisher and Deborah Stolte are expiring.
Filing is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays in the superintendent’s office on FM 486.
RHD—There is no Rockdale Hospital District Election scheduled in 2o13.
