Services for Simon Hernandez, 90, of Copperas Cove will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Rockdale. Darrell Johnson will officiate.
Mr. Hernandez died Sunday, Feb. 17, in Hill Country Nursing Home in Copperas Cove.
He was born Aug. 28, 1922, to Luisa Galvan in Poth.
Mr. Hernandez served in the U.S. Army in Italy during World War II.
He worked in civil service at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio working on the flight line. He retired after 30 years.
Mr. Hernandez was a member of the American Legion.
He married Mary Catherine Greene on May 7, 1988, in Rockdale.
He enjoyed his garden and anything God planted on the earth, as well as baseball, wrestling and boxing.
Mr. Hernandez had played minor league baseball.
He was a member of Robertson Avenue Baptist Church in Copperas Cove.
He was preceded in death by an infant grandson; a stepson, David Johnson; and his mother, Luisa Galvan.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Catherine Hernandez of Copperas Cove; three sons, Mario Rogelio Hernandez, Armando Hernandez and Ronald G. Hernandez, all of San Antonio; two daughters, Viola Virginia Herrera and Roxanne Knight, both of California; five stepsons, Darrell Johnson of Rockdale, Robert Johnson of Wichita, Kansas, Curtis Johnson of New Braunfels, Bill Johnson of Fort Worth, Calvin Johnson of Crockett; two stepdaughters, Carol McDaniel of Rockdale, Cindy Sanders of Grapeland; and three sisters, Juanita Vela of Texas, Isabel Baldedes and Yolanda Hernandez, both of San Antonio; also, a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Paul Lopez, Raymond McBride, Todd Carson, Andy Johnson, Shane Woods, Tracy Clark, Angelo Hernandez and Juan Martinez.
