Crawford erases Wesley’s 1973 record

Wesley Wesley While it slipped under the over-crowded sports radar last week, Jaqualyn Crawford etched his name among the greats in Rockdale track history.

Crawford shattered the oldest mark on the seventh grade books when he turned in an 11.64 to slip by t he g reat D on W esley, w ho sprinted to an 11.7, 40 years ago, in 1973.

Crawford also shattered the clock in the 400 by recording a time of 53.32, besting Tyrone Jackson’s 1988 mark of 55.6.

Dav ion Ford also tied the eighth grade triple jump record with a leap of 39-feet, set by Blade Bassler in 1997.

Wesley is part of the quartet that still holds the school record in the sprint relay and anchored the 1977 state championship track team.

He held the school records in the 100 and 200 for years and remains the school’s all-time leading rusher in football to this day.
