City special session set for Monday

The Rockdale City Council will hold a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the Patterson Civic Center to hear a presentation from the Orasi Firm.

That firm was one of three which recently made presentations to the city concerning the promotion of tourism and the lodging industry in Rockdale, using funds formerly administered by the Chamber of Commerce.

The city council is considering a contract with an outside firm to handle events and other activities promoting Rockdale tourism and its hotel industry.

At the council’s February month- ly meeting, members decided to delay action until after the public town hall-type meeting with the Orasi group and any interested parties, including the hotel and motel community.

The council also heard presentations from the Miller Firm and Aria at previous meetings.

At the February meeting, the council was asked not to make a decision until a public meeting could be scheduled.

The hotel-motel tax, which had been administered by the Chamber of Commerce for many years, provided a major source of operating funds for that organization.

After last year’s executive board decision not to administer the tax in 2013, the Chamber did not fill the vacant position of president, created by the resignation of Deedra Jacob in October.

The Chamber applied for, and received, hotel-motel tax from the city which has enabled the organization to continue to employ a secretary and keep its rock house headquarters open.
