RISD REPORT

Music in our schools month
Dr. Howell Wright

March is quite a month for educators; we have celebrated Texas Public Schools Week and we also celebrate Music in our Schools Month.

Rockdale has been very fortunate to have the band directors and music teachers currently employed by our district. Our music programs at the Elementary and Intermediate Schools have helped support several of our district’s major celebrations this year. Hearing our children sing has been awesome and knowing that they are exposed to good music direction at an early age is important for their academic development.

Likewise our Junior High band students have participated in contests and performed quite well. They too have displayed their music skills to our community in a couple of concert opportunities this year.

What an exceptional year our High School band has had. There have been numerous individuals earn honors at the Regional level and with concert and sight reading competitions just a few weeks away there is an expectation that they will perform at the highest level.

Marching band in the fall marked a return to the Area contest for the first time since 2009. Watching our students perform, knowing the hard work and hours of practice they experienced and seeing their enthusiasm was an ultimate opportunity for me this year. It is equally amazing to know the crucial assistance their parents provided during marching season and throughout the year.

Our high school musicians have also provided beautiful and fun music in concerts. Their jazz band has also been a huge supporter performing for several community events.

Music is a force that minimizes differences and creates a common bond of understanding within our schools and communities. Music programs provide positive environments for students at every campus.

Please join our district as we applaud our music teachers and their work during Music in Our Schools Month 2013.
