STAAR, EOC testing underway

By ROBERT WESTBROOK
Superintendent, Milano ISD

I t is hard to believe we are already in April; the school year is going by so fast. With April here, it means school activities are in full swing. Among the items taking place are standardized testing. This week we have started STAAR and End-of- Course testing. Aside from the obvious teaching that occurs leading up to the testing, there is an abundance of training and planning that goes into giving the test. The training and security components that are required to administer the tests seem to parallel that of a presidential visit.

On a more pleasant note, our Athletic Booster Club is having their annual softball games this Saturday, April 6. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the games begin at 9 a.m. There will also be a silent auction. It promises to be a fun filled day. Make plans to attend.

Our One-Act Play recently competed at their district contest. While they did not advance, they have an excellent play and will be holding their public performance at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4 in the high school cafetorium. Come out and support our young thespians; you will be impressed. Next week will be a busy week for us as well. Our district tennis tournament will be held on Monday and Tuesday, April 8-9. The tournament will be held in Somerville, as will our district track meet, which is the following day, April 10. Our athletes will be very busy over the next week getting ready for their district contest. Also, several of these students also play baseball or softball, and their district games take place throughout the week as well.

As you know, the cost of college is very expensive. Any scholarships or financial aid a student receives is of tremendous benefit and is greatly appreciated. With this in mind, MISD will be hosting a scholarship golf tournament on May 18.

Our department heads at the high school will select deserving students to receive these scholarships. If you are interested in helping or contributing, please contact Marsha Lassetter at 512-455–2533. More information on the golf tournament is available on the district’s website at www.milanoisd.net.
