Lady Tigers suffer first district setback
Caldwell took advantage of five Lady Tiger errors and an absence of pop at the plate to hand them their first league loss, 6-1, Thursday night at the Softball Complex.
Caldwell’s win pulls them even with Rockdale (12-4) at the top of the District 18-3A standings as both teams sport 4-1 records.
The Hornets (20-7) have won four straight and six of seven since losing the district opener 1-0 to Taylor.
“You never want to lose but we have to learn from this,” said Rockdale Coach Amanda Keen. “We have to use it for fuel and keep moving forward.”
On top of the four miscues, the Lady Tigers could not solve Caldwell’s freshman pitcher Casey Kauder, who struck out seven batters and allowed just four hits.
Kauder entered the contest with a 0.92 earned run average and improved to 14-5 on the year after throwing 94 pitches on the evening.
No slouch at the plate either, Kauder went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and a double.
She came into the game hitting .447 on the year with 39 runs batted in
Kayla Deary was able to get to Kauder, going 2-for-3 with a double that all was wasted.
The Lady Tigers earned their lone run after back-to-back errors at third base on ground balls by Marissa Mireles and Amanda Boyd.
Caldwell posted two runs in each of the first and fifth innings for a 4-0 lead.
Kayleigh Montelongo (11-4) took the loss after fanning 11 batters and allowing only one earned run.
