TAYLOR—It has almost become a rite of spring.

As sure as bluebonnets will bloom in April, a Tiger tennis twosome are bound for regionals.

Keeping with the Rockdale tradition, the brother-sister duo of Kasey and Jacob Crump captured the mixed doubles district championship and are headed for the regional tournament—the sixth consecutive year a Tiger mixed team has advanced.

Jacob, a senior and Kasey, a sophomore, move on to regionals which will be held April 15-16 at Bryan High School.

“They do great together,” said Rockdale Coach Sarah Warner. “I hadn’t planned on putting them together originally but it worked out better than expected.”

The Crumps dispatched of Jake Boles and Julie Nemac of host Taylor, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch the District 18-3A crown at Taylor High School as wind gusts played havoc with serves and volleys.

To steer through the bracket, they knocked off another Duck duo of Jake Wilson and Thessie Rossainz, 6-4, 6-1 in the semifinals and in their opener, dashed Tarun Muthuchamy and Leah Blume of College Station 6-1, 6-0.

“Jacob is great at pumping Kasey up and knows how to get both of them going,” Warner said. “Jacob knows his sister and knows exactly what to do. Kasey is a great tennis player and they just really compliment each other.”

Dating back to 2008 when cousins Alethea Maldonado and Evan Grandstaff won a district title in mixed doubles, six duos have moved on to the regional tournament, including Ginny Flores and Nic Gonzalez who also earned a trip to the state tournament in 2012.

Gonzalez, who made that state trip in 2012, will miss out this year after placing fourth in boys singles.

Caroline Wilde finished fourth in girls singles.
