Lady Tigers travel to Caldwell with shot at title

The Rockdale Lady Tigers made it official Tuesday night with a 7-1 victory over College Station at the Softball Complex to secure a spot in the state playoffs.

The Lady Tigers (16-5 overall and 7-2 in District 18-3A) close out the regular season Friday at league front-runner Caldwell (23-7, 7-1) with a chance of sharing the district crown, their first since 2007.

Rockdale lost to Caldwell 6-1 in the first round at home.

College Station (13-16, 4-5) is battling Taylor for the third spot., who they host Friday.

Rockdale jumped out 7-0 after the third inning and never looked back in the commanding win. The Lady Tigers have outscored their last two opponents 16-2.

Kayleigh Montelongo sparked Rockdale at the plate and on the hill.

The senior went 2-for-3 at the plate, ripping a pair of triples that racked up two runs batted in.

On the mound, Montelongo (15-5) allowed just one hit while striking out eight Lady Cougars.

Alyssa Wallis was perfect in two at-bats with an RBI, while Amanda Boyd and Emily McCoy mirrored Montelongo with a triple each.

Rockdale was 7-4 at home this season and are 62-22 (74 percent) at the Softball Complex since it opened in 2005.

Navasota

After a lackluster loss to Taylor, the Lady Tigers bounced back in earnest with a convincing 9-1 victory over Navasota (2-6) on the road.

“It was nice to bounce back and have a good win after that tough loss,” said Rockdale Coach Amanda Keen.

While Rockdale managed just two hits in the loss to the Lady Ducks, the Lady Tigers regained their stroke with 14 hits, while also taking advantage of five Lady Rattler errors.

Rockdale punched out eight doubles among its bundle of hits, including two from McCoy, who was 3-for-4 on the night.

Fischer was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in.

On the mound, Montelongo sat down 13 batters without allowing a base on balls.

Rockdale scored two runs in each of the first, fourth and sixth innings, while pouring on three more in the seventh.
