John King was elected mayor of Rockdale Saturday, polling 60 percent of the vote in a three-person race. King drew 319 votes, Collier Perry polled 174 (33 percent) and Toby Johnson drew 35 (seven percent). Nathan Bland won the west ward council post being vacated by Johnson. He drew 252 votes to 163 for Trent Wages. Full Story

60-year prison term returned in 2012 murder
A 47-year-old Rockdale man received a 60-year prison term Tuesday in 20th District Court after the judge rejected his claim of “sudden passion” in the shooting death of his 49-year-old girlfriend with a shotgun. Full Story

Over 1,000 at KC Hall on Sunday
The annual Mayfest celebration of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church lived up to its reputation as “Rockdale’s biggest party” Sunday at the KC Hall.
Perfect spring weather, and a variety of events inside and outside the hall, drew well over 1,000 participants, one of the largest turnouts in years. Full Story

One of the highlights of the car-motorcycle show at Mayfest Sunday, in the KC Hall parking lot, was your basic “camo Volkswagen Bug pickup.” Vehicle owner Danny Masur, who took a lot of pleasure in showing off his unique car to browsers, said the vehicle is about a 1968 model. “It was, obviously, modified,” he said. Home-home series to start tonight in Pollock; Saturday's game in Rockdale
Due to wet field conditions in Klein (where the playoff series was originally set), the RHS Lady Tiger softball team will travel to Pollock Central tonight to play on their home field at 6 p.m. Friday. Saturday's game will be played at 1 p.m. in Rockdale. Game 3 if necessary will be played 30 minutes following the second game. Full Story

MADISONVILLE—There’s one factor that can erase an entire game of futility at the plate—timely hitting.
Taking advantage of some clutch hitting, the Rockdale Lady Tigers swept Huntington out of the playoffs 7-4, 6-4 at Mustang Field and reached the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2006. Full Story

City building permits down for the month
Fiscal year now over $1.7 million in projects
City building permits issued for the month of April totaled $57,350, according to Rockdale city hall officials.
Permits are way down for the month, compared to $519,678 in the month of March.
Permits issued for February totaled just $27,250.
Permit totals for the fiscal year, which started in October, now sit at $1,718,898. Full Story
