MDD awards $23,841 in facade projects

Softball league gets additional $5,000, board eyes Orasi for economic development plans

The Rockdale Municipal Development District (MDD) awarded $23,841.56 in matching facade improvement funds to four entities during its meeting Monday.

Also, as part of a busy agenda, the MDD is talking to Orasi Development about contracting with that firm, which recently signed on to promote tourism in Rockdale, about an economic development agreement.

And the MDD, following up on a previous grant from the city through its tourism committee, has awarded an additional $5,000 to the Rockdale Girls Softball League.

FACADES—The MDD board okayed facade improvements grants to the following entities, which must provide an equal amount toward their projects:

Place of Hope Pregnancy Center, $8,573.

Eagle Automotive, $8,223.55.

The Cedar Shop, $5,150.

Corona’s Mexican Restaurant, $1,894.38.

The applications went through a screening process and were “scored” by a committee.

Kara Clore, MDD interim executive director, said those grants exhaust the amount in the current MDD budget for facade improvements.

ORASI—Directors discussed a possible economic development agreement with Orasi representatives Jack Thompson and Paul Sturiale who noted such development works hand-in-hand with tourism.

“If you’re going the get tourists to your community, you’ve got to have something there,” Sturiale said.

The city, through the recommendation of its Tourism Committee, recently hired Orasi to be a “new pair of eyes” and develop a strategies and projects for attracting tourists to Rockdale.

GSL—The $5,000 awarded the Girls Softball League is for infrastructure improvements to the complex on Bushdale Road.

Recently the city, through it new Tourism Committee, award $4,000 for field improvements geared toward this summer’s state tournament.

The league had also sought additional funds but the Tourism Committee was unsure of its powers to award money for infrastructure projects.
