Annual Round Top music festival to open Saturday
BRENHAM—The 43rd Round Top Music Festival, set to run June 8-July 23, is one of the most prestigious events in the world. The Festival will present more than 35 public events, including orchestral and chamber music concerts, master classes and a children’s concert. Distinguished faculty mentor young artists from all over the world, chosen to participate after challenging auditions.
The Texas Festival Orchestra, conducted by Perry So from China; Heiichiro Ohyama from Japan; Christoph Campestrini from Austria; Edwin Outwater, Michael Stern and Erik Ochsner from the United States; Pascal Verrot from France; and Emilio Coloon from Puerto Rico will perform rarities such as Prokofiev’s Chout, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 and Francis Poulenc’s Concert Champetre in the unique Festival Concert Hall.
Soloists include pianist James Dick, harpsichordist Matthew Dirst, flutist Carol Wincenc, violinist Jonathan Swartz, oboist Erin Hannigan, clarinetist Kenneth Grant, bassoonist Benjamin Kamins and horn Michelle Baker, among others.
The Festival celebrates anniversaries of Richard Wagner, Giuseppe Verdi and Benjamin Britten, all born in 1913; Francis Poulenc and Paul Hindemith who died in 1963; and Sergei Prokofiev who died in 1953.
