Rockdale Noon Lions to hold officer installation

New officers will be inducted during the June 19 Rockdale Noon Lions Club meeting by Zone Chairman Bobby Lingan. New member Joyce Dalley will be inducted and Lion of the Year will be presented. Mike Pruett will be the new membership chair.

Lions held their regular board meeting on June 12 at Gatti’s Pizza.

The Rockdale Junior High Leo Club was chartered May 22 by Lions International and has 32 charter members.

Five $500 Lions Club scholarships were presented to RHS seniors William Dean, Benito Costilla, Grant Galbreath, Melinda Perez and Kaley Dodd.

The club’s eye glass collection project for the needy has been successful.

Incoming District Governor Frank Kinald will visit the club on Aug. 7. Next board meeting will be Wednesday, July 10 at Gatti’s Pizza.

Rockdale Noon Lions Club meets on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at the Rockdale VFD fire station, Bell at Wilcox. The club invites anyone interested to visit a meeting as a club guest to see what Lionism is all about.— Gloria Thrasher- Club Secretary

Genealogy society

Milam County Genealogical Society met May 28 in the conference room at Citizens National Bank with 18 members and one guest attending. Eugenia Newton presented a program concerning the people and businesses of her childhood in early Rockdale.

The MCGS executive committee appointed Lanell Spence to replace the late Judy Matherne as secretary.

Plans are under way to present a genealogy seminar, featuring professional genealogist Lynna Kay Shuffield of Houston, on Saturday, Aug. 3 in the Lucy Patterson Memorial Library’s genealogy section. FMI: Linda Whorton, 512-446-3874 (leave message) or wdwhorton@aol.com.

Next society meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 25 in the meeting room of Rockdale General Store, 1201 W. Hwy. 79. Randy Billingsley will present the program.

Sunshine Quilt Guild

Sunshine ‘n Shadows Quilt Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 27 at Meadowbrook Baptist Church fellowship hall. Members will be making medicine bags for the VA Hospital. FMI: Edna Davidson, 512-446-6316.

Grief support meetings

CAMERON—Standards Hospice is holding Grief Support Group meetings from 5 to 6 p.m. each second and fourth Wednesdays. Greg Nichols is bereavement coordinator. Location is Standards Hospice, 602 N. Travis in Cameron. FMI: 254-284- 0045, extension 2013.

Liberty Cemetery Assn.

The annual Liberty Cemetery Association picnic and meeting will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, July 7 at Liberty Church, according to secretary Judy York.

“If you have family or loved ones buried at the cemetery, we would like to see you attend the meeting and bring your delicious picnic lunch and join in on renewing old friendships or making new ones,” York said.

Those unable to attend this year and but who would like to continue support of maintaining the cemetery may mail a contribution to Frances Gilliland, Treasurer, Liberty Cemetery Association, 4856 FM 3242, Cameron, Texas 76520.
