Superintendent choice declines job

Interim pick likely as trustees continues search to fill top spot

It's back to the drawing board for Rockdale ISD trustees after superintendent-designate Vicki Bridges turned down the job one day before she was to be officially hired.

Lee Jenkins, school board president, presided over a noon-Monday session in the RISD Administration Building that was to have formally hired Bridges. Instead he said Bridges had called him Sunday and declined the position.

Jenkins said Bridges had been offered a "significant" pay raise to stay in her job as chief secondary education officer at the Class 5A Grand Prairie ISD.

Jenkins said board members are continuing the search for a superintendent but it was "likely" an interim superintendent would be hired.

Bridged was selected the "lone finalist" to replace Dr. Howell Wright, whose contract was not renewed, after 33 candidates applied and five were interviewed. A 21-day waiting period was mandated after Bridges was announced as the lone finalist June 11.

Jenkins said board members will continue to use the superintendent profile developed in a series of community meetings conducted by Dr. Bob Griggs and Associates.
