Concert to honor Cliff Simms at Round Top

A concert to honor Rockdale native Clifford Simms will be held Thursday as part of the annual Round Top Music Festival.

The free concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Edythe Bates Old Chapel, 248 Jaster Road, and will feature chamber music with young artists.

Simms was a trumpet player in bands such as Kenny Harris & the Dixies and has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Round Top Music Festival for many years.

Simms’ grandchildren, Randy Reynolds and Tracy Daimler will attend the June 27 concert.

Simms many Rockdale friends are issued a special invitation to attend the concert.

Milano ISD trustees set to meet on Thursday

MILANO—Trustees will consider student transfers for the 2013-14 school year and hear an update on a parking lot project during the regular meeting of the Milano ISD school board set for Thursday night.

The meeting is set to start at 7 p.m. at the MHS library.

Milano Fourth of July parade scheduled

MILANO—The annual Fourth of July parade in Milano begins at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 4 from the MISD football field parking lot, according to city secretary Carolyn Vinton.

She said the parade will end at the Milano Civic Center/Fire Station, where free hot dogs will be served. Plaques will be awarded to parade winners.

Benefit for Dustin Pickel set Aug. 11 at KC Hall

A benefit for Dustin Pickel will be held on Sunday, Aug. 11 at Rockdale KC Hall. Pickel was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma June 2012, seven weeks after his second birthday.

Dustin is the son of Jeff and Kelly Pickel and grandson of John and Sharon Shoemake, all of Rockdale.

Organizers said a barbecue meal with all the trimmings, starting at 11 a.m., dine in or take out. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Rockdale Reporter. A live auction starts at 12:30 p.m. and also a chance drawing.

An account has been established at Citizen’s National Bank under the name of St. John’s UMC-Team Dustin Benefit.

There is also a way to donate online at www.YouCaring.com with PayPal.

Donations may also be mailed to St. John’s UMC-Team Dustin, C/O Denise Starnes, 121 Champions Dr., Rockdale, TX 7 6567. All donations are welcome.

Donations are also being accepted for the auction by calling Gaye Bland at 512-446-2693. Team Dustin T-shirts will be available at a later date.

Milam Democrats plan two monthly sessions

The Milam County Democratic Women and the Milam County Democratic Party will hold their regular monthly meeting 7 p.m. Thursday at the law office at 312 South Houston Ave. in Cameron.

Richard Stone, county chairman, urged all party members, precinct chairs, elected officials and others interested in building and supporting the party to attend.
