170 attend 49th Appelt reunion; Brogger re-elected president

HALLETTSVILLE—The 49th Appelt reunion was held June 2 at Appelt’s Hill Hall in Hallettsville. About 170 people were served a prepared lunch of stew and sausage, along with side dishes and desserts brought by members.

President Otto “Buddy” Brogger of Rockdale expressed appreciation to volunteers who worked to make the reunion a success. Leading various activities were Tommy Macha and Ronnie Appelt, stew and sausage crew; Susan Gilbert, kitchen crew; Hilmer and Margaret Appelt, prizes; Pam Reinhart, family genealogist.

Veterans and current members of the armed forces were recognized. Also recognized was Jillian Strauss, daughter of Pat and Lori Strauss of Victoria, and granddaughter of Gladys Strauss of Shiner, on her 2013 high school graduation.

Family members who passed away since the last reunion were remembered with a moment of silence: Bobby Joe Appelt Sr. of Hallettsville, age 78; Erwin C. Kiesewetter of Hallettsville, 86; Royce Eugene Jalufka of Yoakum, 71; LaVerne Wilke Tielke of Richmond, 83; Otto Leon Brogger Sr. of Rockdale, 83; Wilma Hasse Appelt Vickers of Houston, 93; Willie J. “Bill” Macha of Yoakum, 92; Dr. Glenn Appelt of Gulf Shores, AL, 77.

Awards and gift cards were presented as follows: Oldest member present, Howard Appelt of Hallettsville, 90; youngest, Tristan Mertz, age 5-1/2 months, son of Ryan and Tiffanie Mertz of Alvin, grandson of Robert and Diane Mertz of Houston; longest married, James and Mae Rother of Hallettsville, 60 years; newlyweds, Taylor and Heather Appelt of Tomball, married 3 months; largest family attending, Ann Birkner family, 30 members; traveled fartherest (1,000 miles), Kyle Appelt of Colorado Springs, CO.

Reunion officers were elected as follows: Buddy Brogger, president; Ronnie Appelt, VP; Bettye Appelt, treasurer; Barbara Appelt, secretary; Pam Reinhart, historian. Appreciation was expressed to Linda Ward, retiring secretary, and Ann Birkner retiring historian.

Door prizes were given in memory of Marie Holy. Next year, the 50th reunion will be held at Appelt’s Hill Hall on June 1, 2014.—Linda Ward, reunion reporter
