Luminant tax value decision now July 19

Big factor in tax rates for RISD and county

Needing key information on the status of Milam County’s biggest taxpayer in order to complete its budget and tax rate process, the Rockdale ISD will have to wait a little longer.

The Milam Appraisal District’s (AD) appraisal review board was to have made a decision on taxable values for Luminant on Monday (July 8).

But now that decision has been delayed until July 19, according to Chief Appraiser Pat Moraw.

That’s five days before certified values must be submitted to Milam taxing entities.

Moraw told The Reporter that thecompanyandARBhave agreed on values for Sandow Power Plant Unit 4 but have not yet reached an agreement on Unit 5.

Luminant and the ARB have been discussing the values in tax protest hearings.

The Luminant values are a major factor in the Rockdale ISD budget and also affect the Milam County budget.

Two weeks ago, Marla Wallace RISD chief financial officer, said the new budget is currently being figured on a tax increase from the current $1.2384 to $1.2751.

Last year a 5-cent tax rate hike was forecast based on preliminary figures, but a lesser-than-expected drop in values resulted in a 1.34-cent increase instead.
