Milam puts burn ban into effect

With grass fires increasing on an almost daily basis, Milam County commissioners on Monday placed the county under a burn ban for at least 90 days.

Henry Horelica, Cameron VFD fire chief and president of the Milam County Fire Chiefs Association, told commissioners all eight Milam fire chiefs recommended imposition of a burn ban in the rural areas of the county.

Milam municipalities have their own, permanent, bans on burning within the city limits.

After Monday’s actions, 113 of Texas’s 254 counties have outdoor burning bans.

Shoe drive begins for local children

The Rockdale Rotary club, Chamber of Commerce and Meadowbrook Baptist Church are sponsoring the annual shoe drive for local children, which last year served more than 100.

Signup has begun, with the giveaway set Aug. 6.

To sign up for shoes call the church 512-446-3367 or the Chamber, 512-446- 2030.

Those wishing to donate may call either of the two numbers above.

Make checks payable to Meadowbrook Baptist Church.

“One hundred percent of the donations will be used for shoes,” Denice Doss, drive coordinator, said.
