Third annual shoe drive aiding needy children

Meadowbrook Baptist Church, Rockdale Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce are continuing their annual shoe drive for needy school children, according to Denice Doss, publicist.

Signup will continue through July with distribution to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

To sign up to receive shoes call Meadowbrook Baptist Church, 512-446-3367, or Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, 512-446-2030.

To donate for the drive call either of the two numbers above. Make checks payable to Meadowbrook Baptist Church as 100 percent of the donations will be used to purchase the shoes.

This is the third year for the giveaway. Last year more than 100 children were provided with shoes, Doss said.

Milano council to start meeting twice monthly

MILANO—City council members in Milano will now meet on the first and third Mondays of the month, instead of just once.

Council members voted in the change at their regular meeting held Monday at the Milano Civic Center.

The city’s fiscal year dates were also approved for change, moving to Oct. 1 to Sept. 30. The city’s original charter from 1977 had it listed as Jan. 1 to Dec. 31.

Council members heard a presentation from Casey Garner, director of marketing with G2 Builders and a representative for investors who are interested in building a retirement community complex in the city, which would house its own community center and a doctor’s office on site. More information on this project is expected at the council’s July 29 meeting.

The council also approved the second readings for ordinances on sex offender regulations, sex offender residency and municipal fees.

MISD trustees set to meet Thursday

MILANO—School trustees for Milano ISD will hear a presentation by U.S. Capital Advisors, LLC during their regular meeting set Thursday at the MHS library. The presentation is an update on the district’s current bond.

Board members will also consider developing a district strategic plan, school meal prices and review dates for regular board meetings for the 2013-2014 school year.

‘Wounded warrior’ fund raiser ahead Aug. 3rd

A fund-raising barbecue for the Wounded Warrior project, which assists severely-wounded military personnel, is set for Aug. 3 at Tonkawa Cycles in downtown Rockdale at 115 West Cameron (US 79).

Plates, priced at $5 each, will be sold from “9 a.m. until done.” Plates will also be sold to go.

There will also be “ take a chance” drawings with instant winners.

Food bank giveaway Thursday at KC Hall

The monthly third Thursday surplus food giveaway by the Capital Area Mobile Food Bank of Austin is set for 9 a.m. Thursday in the KC Hall Parking lot.

There are no restrictions on who receives food.

Denise Sifuentes, organizer, noted that since the distribution relies totally on volunteer help, volunteers are needed and will be greatly appreciated.

Thorndale VFW Post schedules ‘jamboree’

Thorndale VFW Post 4009 & Auxiliary will hosting the Thorndale Country & Gospel Music Jamboree Monday, July 22, at the Thorndale VFW Hall

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the music starts at 7. The show is the fourth Monday of every Month except December.

The kitchen will serve sausage wraps, chicken salad sandwiches, homemade pies and desserts and drinks.

Thorndale city cancels session over police chief

The City of Thorndale was to have had a special council session Monday with the future of Police Chief Fred Keefer on the line but the meeting was canceled.

The posted agenda had listed an incorrect date for the meeting, “Monday, July 16th.” Monday was July 15.

The only agenda item read “Council to consider and possibly take action regarding the employment of the chief of police. Action may include termination of employment and appointment of an interim chief of police. A public hearing will be held on this item.”

Genealogy workshop ahead at city library

The Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library will host a genealogy workshop with professional genealogist Lynna Kay Shuffield from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3.

Donations are $5 and lunch will be provided. Deadline to sign up is Friday, July 26.

POSGCD hosting GMA area meeting July 25th

MILANO—The Post Oak Savannah Groundwater Conservation District (POSGCD) will host the Groundwater Management Area (GMA) 12 joint planning meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 25.

The meeting will be in the Milano Civic Center.

Agenda items include a resolution on the reassignment of the Brazos Valley GCD to Region 12 and discussion on the desired future conditions of the aquifers kin GMA-12.

Water flushing set overnight July 17th

Rockdale’s monthly water hydrant f lushing is scheduled for overnight Wednesday, July 17, according to City Manager Kelvin Knauf.

Knauf said hydrants in all areas of town will be flushed.

“Please run your cold water taps a few minutes the next morning upon arising,” Knauf said.
