Interim superintendent topic for three meetings
Rockdale ISD trustees will hold three special sessions in upcoming days as they continue to grapple with the refusal of a superintendent finalist to accept the post vacated by Dr. Howell Wright.
Special school board meetings are set for 12-noon Friday, July 19, and 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 22, and Tuesday, July 23.
Friday’s meeting is to designate Pam Kaufmann, current assistant superintendent for instruction and administration, to perform superintendent’s duties until an interim person is hired.
In next week’s meetings, executive sessions are planned to interview candidates for the position of interim superintendent.
Trustees may not take any action in closed sessions. Meetings would have to be reconvened in open session before any votes could be taken on any business.
INTERIM—Board members are now planning to hire an interim superintendent instead of selecting a successor to Dr. Wright after Vicki Bridges, the board’s choice, declined their offer of a contract earlier this month following the mandatory 21-day waiting period.
Bridges decided to remain at her position as chief secondary education officer in the Grand Prairie ISD.
Lee Jenkins, board president, said the two other persons interviewed by the board in its quest to replace Dr. Wright have already “gone in different directions.”
He said trustees believe the interim superintendent position will be “three to four days per week for six to nine months” and that recruiting for a permanent superintendent probably won’t begin until around the end of the year.”
“Our goal is to have someone (the interim) hired by Aug. 1,” he said.
Jenkins said the board will not have to wait 21 days to hire the interim person, as it would for a superintendent. “This hiring can be instantaneous,” he said.
