Vehicle destroys church bell tower

Reporter/Mike Brown Reporter/Mike Brown It’s not what members of Springfield Baptist Church expected to find at daybreak Friday, the rubble of the church’s bell tower after a bizarre accident at 4:03 a.m. From left, church members Henry Miller, Danny Mitchell, Kefa Mitchell and Billy Ray Locklin approach the damage caused when a southbound Lincoln Navigator, driven by Christopher Thompson of Rockdale, went through the Plum-Third intersection and crashed into the tower. Passenger Robbie Thompson, mother of Christopher and the vehicle’s owner, was taken to Richards Memorial Hospital. The tower’s 1886 bell was not damaged and was plucked from the rubble. Christopher Thompson was charged with failure to stop.
