64th Watson reunion held at Tanglewood
TANGLEWOOD— Family members from the James Watson and Catherine Hamilton Watson family held their 64th annual reunion Sunday, June 20 at Tanglewood Christian Camp.
Johnny Kirvin Menges, and daughter Vanissa McCoy, hosted the reunion and have done so since 2002. Family members from all over Texas came to the one-day event. From 1949 to 2001, the reunion was held in Lampasas at Hancock Park.
Largest contingent of family members was from the Bobby McLean family, with 15 members from the Temple-Lorena area.
The farthest travelers, Ronnie and Kathy Menges, were from Encinal, near Laredo. Youngest attending was 16-month-old Connor Ethan Wood from San Antonio, and the oldest in attendance was Nora Lee Watson Fisher, 82, from Houston.
James and Catherine Watson, had 10 children, one passing away at a very young age. The family, with nine children, moved from Green County Kentucky into the Rockdale area in mid-1890, living and farming in the Bethlehem community northwest of Rockdale. Many of the family members are buried in local cemeteries.
James Watson immigrated from Ireland in 1848, married Catherine Hamilton in November 1854 in Green County Kentucky, and they had 10 children born in Greenup, Bullitt, and Green County of Kentucky. They are buried in the Murray Cemetery.— Eugene Watson, reporter
