Rockdale VFW holding school supplies drive
Rockdale VFW Post 6525 and its Ladies Auxiliary are now accepting donations for a school supplies drive. Donations can be dropped off at the VFW Post, 978 US Highway 79, or mailed to LA VFW, PO Box 186, Rockdale TX 76567.
The supplies will be distributed on Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the post hall.

Rockdale summer band practice starts Aug. 1st
Rockdale ISD director of bands Adrian Acevedo has announced the schedules for summer band practice that is set to start on Aug. 1.
Those attending should bring instrument, supplies (valve oil, reeds, etc.), music flip-folder and lyre, ball cap, sunglasses, light-colored clothing, low-top tennis shoes (no sandals), sunscreen and water, Acevedo said.
On Aug. 1-2, freshmen, leadership team, color guard and percussion will meet at the band hall from 8:30- 11:30 a.m.
On Aug. 5-9, full band rehearsal will be held from 8:30-11:30 a.m., followed by sectionals for brass and woodwinds from 12:30-1:30 p.m. and sectionals for color guard and percussion from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
The group will follow that same schedule the week of Aug. 12-16.
The week of Aug. 19-22, the band will have evening practices from 5-7 p.m. There will be a parents meeting for band members at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 at the band hall.
Sixth grade orientation Aug. 7 at Rockdale JH
Rockdale Junior High sixth grade students are invited to a special orientation program at the school on Wednesday, Aug. 7, according to counselor Angela White. The event will run from 9-11 a.m. in the RHS commons area.
“This day is designed for students. Parents are encouraged to let their children attend this orientation day on their own,” White said. “Students should be dropped off by 8:50 a.m. in bus zone by the teacher parking lot. Students should be picked up by 11 a.m. Wear comfortable clothing.”
White said the purposes of the program are to learn about your bus rules and expectations, to practice what to do when you first arrive at school, to find your locker and learn how to use a combination lock, to walk through your daily schedule, to learn the general rules of the school, to learn cafeteria procedures and to find your bus at the end of the school day.

THS barbecue meal sale for after prom party
THORNDALE—Thorndale High School Class of 2014 will hold a barbecue fund-raiser Sunday, Aug. 4, according to spokesperson Marcy Jones.
Serving will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Thorndale Fireman’s Hall. Menu will include barbecue pork, potato salad, beans, noodles, bread and tea. Desserts available for donation. Dine in or “to-go” line will be available for $8 each.
Proceeds will benefit the seniors’ Project After Prom, drug-free and alcohol free party after prom.
RHS cheerleaders set rah-rah mini camp
Rockdale High School varsity cheerleaders will hold their annual Rah-Rah Mini Cheer Camp from 9-11 a.m. Aug. 12-14 at the RHS Gym, according to spokesperson Tina Barcak.
The camp is for Pre-K through sixth graders, cost is $30 per child and will include a T-shirt and pre-game performance during the upcoming Tiger football season. Parent performance will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 14.

Bulldog Band fish fry fund-raiser Aug. 18th
THORNDALE— A fish fry dinner and silent auction for the Thorndale Bulldog Band will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 18 at the Thorndale Fireman’s Hall, according to spokesperson Starla Hall.
Menu includes fried catfish, beans, noodles, coleslaw, bread, pickles, onions and dessert for $8 per plate. Dine in or take out available. Proceeds to benefit the Bulldog Band.
Parent orientation for RJH 6th graders Aug. 23
An orientation meeting for Rockdale Junior High sixth grade parents has been set for 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23 in the RJH commons area.
Students will pick up their schedules and walk through a mini-class schedule.
The first official day of school is Monday, Aug. 26.
