Benefit ahead Aug. 11 for three-year-old; autographed sports memorabilia join list
Autographed sports items from some of the biggest sports names in—and out of—Texas have joined the list of auction items to benefit a three-year-old who has bravely battled a horrific form of cancer for more than a year.
The Dustin Pickel benefit is set for Aug. 11 at the KC Hall and includes a barbecue sale, an auction and a fund-raiser for a side of processed beef. Full Story
Police support local patrolman touched by tragedy in Waco
The Rockdale Police Department is used to providing a helping hand to those touched by tragic situations but this week has been unlike anything that’s ever happened before.
Virtually the entire department turned out on Tuesday for the funeral of Michael and Deborah Sheppard in Waco. They were the parents of Rockdale Ofc. Sterling Sheppard. Full Story
Social Security scam heads north of the river
A scammer sounding a lot like the one who tried unsuccessfuly to coerce a Rockdale woman into giving up banking account information last week appears to be plying his trade in Cameron. Full Story
‘Unauthorized’ charge filed here
A 25-year-old Rockdale man was arrested July 23 and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, in connection with a vehicle taken to New Mexico without permission, according to Lt. J D. Newlin.
Joshua Ray Flores remains in the county jail in lieu of $26,000 bond.

City, MDD set Thursday afternoon sessions
Rockdale’s Municipal Development District will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at the MDD office, and there’s a called city council session at 5:30 at City Hall.
The city will go into executive session to discuss the possible sale of real estate at 202 Beverly Drive to a business interest. Any action would be in open session. Full Story
Milano First Baptist holding VBS next week
First Baptist Church in Milano has announced dates for its annual Vacation Bible School. The dates are Sunday, Aug. 4 through Thursday, Aug. 8 with times set from 6-8 p.m. each evening.
