More items donated in ‘Dustin’ auction

Benefit ahead Aug. 11 for three-year-old; autographed sports memorabilia join list

Autographed sports items from some of the biggest sports names in—and out of—Texas have joined the list of auction items to benefit a three-year-old who has bravely battled a horrific form of cancer for more than a year.

The Dustin Pickel benefit is set for Aug. 11 at the KC Hall and includes a barbecue sale, an auction and a fund-raiser for a side of processed beef.

AUTOGRAPHS—Rockdale native Mike Speer said items to be auctioned include footballs signed by Houston Texans Head Coach Gary Kubiak, Texas Tech Red Raider Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury, California Golden Bears Head Coach Sonny Dykes and Baylor Bear Head Coach Art Briles.

Also joining the list this week is an autographed baseball signed by living Texas legend Nolan Ryan, a butchered processed steer ($1,200 to $1,300 pounds of meat) and a $100 gift certificate to Cooper’s Barbecue in Llano, Speer said.

Other new donations include a Savage 243 camouflage rifle and scope, donated by Richard Valdez, a cedar yard swing by John Hughes and a vacation-fishing trip to the Texas Coast by Miller and Kathie Bassler.

Items already donated include:

Week’s vacation at Lake Conroe, 5-day vacation at Padre Island, picnic table, children’s picnic table, two outdoor rockers, Adirondack chair and foot stool, wooden glider, Yeti cooler and a helicopter ride.

BEEF—Speer, now a longtime resident of Marquez, has donated two sides of processed beef—approximately 450 pounds each—to be awarded in a fund-raising drawing.

The beef is to be picked up at Brother’s Meat Processing in Jewett following the drawing.

Tickets for the drawing are $20 each or six for $100 and are available at The Reporter or Miller-Starnes Chevrolet-Buick.

SUPPORT—Members of St. John’s United Methodist Church will wear their “Team Dustin” shirts to the 11 a.m worship service Sunday to show their support for Dustin and his family and for the benefit.

The committee coordinating the Team Dustin benefit is in need of financial donations for the purchase of noodles, beans and cabbage for side dishes at the Aug. 11 event.

BBQ, AUCTION—The barbecue lunch, with all the trimmings, begins at 11 a.m. Aug. 11 dine in or take out. Tickets are $10 and are available at The Reporter, which is also selling “Team Dustin” T-shirts.

The live auction begins around 1 p.m.

Checks should be made payable to St. John’s United Methodist Church or to “Team Dustin.”

MORE SUPPORT—There are other ways to support the effort.

An account has been established at Citizens National Bank in the name of “St. John’s UMC—Team Dustin.”

Donations may also be made through the website www.YouCaring.com, which accepts PayPal.

Mail-in donations are accepted in care of Denise Starnes, 121 Champions Drive, Rockdale, TX 76567.

To donate to the auction, contact Gaye Bland at 512-446-2693.
