No action taken by city on property purchase

Rockdale City Council members emerged from an executive session Thursday at City Hall and took no action on a property purchase request.

City Manager Kelvin Knauf said a business owner had asked about the possibility of purchasing cityowned land at 292 Beverly Drive, part of the city’s wastewater plant complex.

Knauf said he did not anticipart of the matter would be placed on a future agenda.

Cameron hospital hearing re-scheduled

A 20th District Court hearing which was to have provided further clarity on the situation involving Cameron’s Central Texas Hospital has been re-scheduled for Aug. 19.

The hearing, an outgrowth of the legal troubles surrounding hospital leasee Dr. Tariq Mahmoud of Cedar Hill, was to have taken place Thursday, Aug. 2.

But a district court spokesperson said the rescheduled hearing might not be held if the parties involved reach an agreement prior to Aug 19.

Rockdale-based Little River Healthcare stepped in to keep the Cameron hospital in operation two weeks ago.

Third annual shoe drive aiding needy children

Meadowbrook Baptist Church, Rockdale Rotary Club and the Rockdale Chamber of Commerce are continuing their annual shoe drive for needy school children, according to Denice Doss, publicist.

Signup will continue through July with distribution to be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

To donate for the drive call either of the two aforementioned numbers. Make checks payable to Meadowbrook Baptist Church as 100 percent of the donations will be used to purchase the shoes.

Line flushing scheduled Aug. 14 in Rockdale

The monthly line flushing by Rockdale city crews is set for overnight Wednesday, Aug. 14, according to City Manager Kelvin Knauf.

Knauf said lines will be flushed in both east and west sections of town.

“Upon arising the next morning, please run your cold water taps for a few minutes until the stream runs clear,” he said.

Steelworkers picnic ahead Aug. 17 at Ranch

The annual United Steelworkers Local 4895 picnic is set for Saturday Aug. 17 at The Ranch, according to David Edmonds, spokesman.

Edmonds said the picnic will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m and invites all Local 4895 members to attend.

August arrives with string of 100 readings

Just in case you haven’t noticed, summer has arrived full force in Rockdale.

The high temperatures in Rockdale topped the 100-degree mark every day during the past week, reaching 105 on the first day of August.

There were also two highs of 103 and one of 102 during the week.

August is traditionally the hottest month in Rockdale. In 2012 the mercury climbed above the century mark on 18 of August’s 31 days.

But in the scorching summer of 2011, there were 27 highs of at least 100 recorded in August,

Rockdale’s hottest temperatures ever have been logged in the last week of August to first week of September, including the all-time high of 113 recorded on Sept. 4, 2000.
